MNRF Steps up Bear Wise Campaign as Human Interactions Increase

The MNRF and the province are taking its Bear Wise campaign one step further this summer to make sure northerners are staying safe.

The campaign is targeting cottage goers.

Sharing information on how to safely and securely store garbage without attracting bears, from how to dispose of grease to how to dispose of discarded meats and produce.

While camping, looking for signs of any bear activity, storing food effectively, sticking to well-travelled areas and burning food scraps are all great deterrents.

For anyone travelling in a wooded area making noise as you move, travelling in a group, being aware of your surroundings or bringing a whistle or bear spray are all great deterrents.

The Bear Wise initiative was put forth by the MNRF to combat the rise in bear-human interactions, especially in northern Ontario.

If you do spot a bear in your community or property which may pose a threat you’re asked to call police immediately, for any other reports you can head to the Bear Wise website or call the MNRF.
