Renovated continuing care unit unveiled at Sensenbrenner Hospital

After several months of construction Sensenbrenner Hospital in Kapuskasing unveiled in renovated continuing care unit on Thursday afternoon. The facility will accommodate 20 about residents and patients who will be moved into the area Monday.

Manager Lise Kozlovich says a lot of careful planning went into it to help those with Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

“In Dementia a lot of colours come in play, we need contrast for everything,” she said. “For example, the toilet seats are grey compared to being white, the patterns in the dining room and dining room chairs do not have swirls. Some Dementia patients see snakes all over so we had to avoid those patterns.

Kozlovich says some of the other changes include a lower counter to accommodate wheelchairs and scooters.

“The wall is Dementia friendly you have all the pictures, old pictures from the town of Kap,” she said. “Soon to come are pictures of the surrounding municipalities as well to trigger memories.
