Kap History: Road Construction in 1961

Construction on Highway 11 is not only a big topic now, but it was also back in 1961. It’s the subject of this week’s Kap history segment.

A Northern Times article from June 14th, 1961 reports that heavy construction along the highway was planned according to Kap Mayor Norman S Grant. During a recent Chamber meeting, Grant said that already a paving plant was set up to finish up the last of the gravel road between Opasatika and Hearst.

There was about 35 miles of highway 11 to be done. He added that construction plans also included a culvert replacement near the golf course and improving a section of the highway between Kap and Moonbeam that was deteriorating.
