Kap town council supporting resolution to return connecting link to province

Kapuskasing town council is joining other municipalities in the push to have connecting link responsibilities to be turned back over to the provincial government.

The town looks after 6.80 kilometres of Highway 11 and has invested over $20 million in construction and rehabilitation work since 2006.

Mayor Dave Plourde says it’s an issue he’s had ongoing discussions with the Ministry of Transportation.

“You know a lot of our budget goes to the repair and maintenance of the Connecting Link,” he said. “The fact that the Connecting link exists going through the TransCanada highway is exactly the reason why the damage is occurring not because of our local traffic but the heavy equipment that goes through on a daily basis.”

Plourde says the town recently completed a stretch of Government Road from Riverside Drive to McPherson and will have to do it again in the near future.

The average cost per kilometre for highway construction in the north is $545,000 based on 2009 data from the Northern Policy institute.
