Hearst joins Kap with issues finalizing its 2024 municipal budget

The town of Hearst’s administrator is hopeful in reducing the 2024 municipal budget from a proposed 9 per cent increase down to 6.5.

Eric Picard says there is work to do, but some unexpected money may help them get to that goal. Last night, town council deferred a budget vote to a special meeting next week. When budget deliberations began, Hearst was looking at a tax increase of 11.75, but upon further review that number has since been lowered.

Meantime, Hearst is not alone in its problems as town of Kapuskasing continues to wrestle with its budget.

A council meeting is set for this Monday night when it will be revealed whether the tax hike has been dropped from 10.5 per cent to a level more in line with neighbouring communities.
