The provincial government’s Forest Biomass Program is putting up $60-million over three years to develop the economic potential of underutilized wood and mill byproducts.
At Millson Forestry in Timmins on Friday, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry Graydon Smith said the biomass can be used for things like energy, right through to building materials.
“Forest biomass also has many emerging uses,” he explained, “including renewable natural gas, bioplastics and hydrogen, responsible alternatives to carbon-intensive products.”
Millson is getting $500,600 to buy equipment that converts biomass into mulch for the local market, and to provide heat for its greenhouse.

“These 12 projects are a diverse range of research, innovation and modernization,” Smith told the gathering in the Millson greenhouse, “that will help develop the potential of Ontario’s forest biomass resources. They represent sevel of the program’s funding streams demonstrating the range of potential that our forest biomass program is bringing to life across our province.”
