A huge step is being taken towards Northeastern Ontario dominating mineral production in this country.
Canada Nickel Company is already developing the Crawford Creek nickel mine north of Timmins. Now, CEO Mark Selby has announced establishment of two state-of-the-art processing plants in what he calls “the Timmins Nickel District”.
“A nickel processing plant that when it’s fully expanded, will be the largest nickel processing facility in North America,” he says, “and a stainless steel and alloy production plant that will be the largest in Canada.”
“Each of these plants will be designed to utilize our carbon storage capacity at Crawford, and allow each of these facilities to be world leading, zero carbon facilities: zero carbon nickel and zero carbon steel.”
Selby notes that the worldwide demand for nickel is expected to double in the next ten years, to build batteries for electric cars. He expects nickel production at the Timmins plant to begin by 2027.
