Kap Community Garden celebrates first year

There’s a lot of thanks being given this Thanksgiving weekend, for the first year of a community garden in Kapuskasing.

Warm Belly Kitchen coordinator Amanda Rickard says the joint project of nine agencies and several individuals saw this year as a trial run,  and lucked in to a beautiful gardening season.

“Because it was so hot, there was a lot of excess watering going on,” Rickard remarks,”but we did have a beautiful crop of potatoes and a lot of peas and beans.”

All that produce goes to the kitchen and individuals in Kap.

In the next few months, a survey will go out, asking you how you want your community garden to operate.  Rickard says that includes whether you want to pay for a plot or gardening box… and do you want a community grow and community harvest.

“This is going to become incredibly important,” says Rickard.  “There’s other ways to support our community in regards to food security, and that was the intention from all the agencies.”
