It’s okay to go for a walk

You’ve probably noticed that while officials in our district are saying it’s okay to go out for a walk during the coronavirus pandemic, chief public health officer of Canada, Dr. Theresa Tam, is not.

Dr. Lianne Catton, medical officer of health for the Porcupine Health Unit says it is okay, with proper precautions.

She says one advantage we have in the north is the wide open spaces.

“We have a very different population density and very different capacity for individuals to enjoy the outdoors with their immediate family members only, in a safe manner,” the MOH notes.

Catton continues to discourage outdoor get-togethers with anyone who doesn’t live with you, even maintaining the two-metre distance rule.

“The opportunity that we have here is people can go out in their yards, they can walk down one of our lovely country roads with their family members that they live with – that’s the big key,  is family members that you are already in the household with on a regular basis.”

If are recovering from COVID-19, however, the doctor says you should only go outside in your own yard, with no one else around.
