Cannabis store headed to Kapuskasing’s circle if application approved

A cannabis store could be coming to the model town. Small Town Buds has an application for a store on the circle with the Alcohol and Game Commission. Contractors had begun renovating the downstairs location. AGCO Senior Communications Advisor Raymond Kahnert says the public notice part of the application concluded on Monday at midnight.

“The public notice period began on June 22 where residents of Kapuskasing could send in their series of comments or concerns,” he said. “As of midnight Monday, we didn’t receive any comments at all.”

Kahnert says a license will be granted if all of the legal requirements have been met.

“If the store is approved and those residents of your community who choose to go in and purchase recreational cannabis, then they can be assured that there had been some oversight and diligence knowing that the operator will run the store with honesty and integrity,” he said.

It’s not yet known how long the process will take and when the cannabis store will open. Kapuskasing has no special bylaws preventing those stores from opening. Town officials say the owners are meeting all the requirement and they have no issues with it.

The closest retail cannabis store currently in our area is in Timmins on Algonquin Boulevard.
