Kap History – Separate School Board dealing with rapid enrolment increase in 1965

A major increase in student enrolment at the separate school board in Kapuskasing is the focus of this week’s local history segment.

The Wednesday, March 31st 1965 edition of the Northern Times had a front-page story about the board needing more space to accommodate the influx of students. Total enrolment at the existing five separate schools: St Patrick’s, Jacques Cartier, Jeanne Mance, Sacred Heart and Immaculate Conception in 1965 was 2,300.

The story reported that construction at Andre Cary School was expected to help alleviate the problem for the next six years but instead it would only be a temporary measure.

In September of that year, the board moved all Grade 7 and 8 students to Andre Cary and spread the lower grades throughout the classrooms of the other schools.

A special thanks to the Kapuskasing Public Library for use of its archives.
