When slowpitch league players in Kapuskasing begin their season next summer, they’ll notice major improvements to the Carlo Cattarello ball parks.
Recreation director Corey Olford says all of the work was completed in August including the installation of the new engineered clay in the infields.
“The regrading of the crowing of the infield to improve the drainage, the removal of the vegetation that was under the fences,” he said. “The installation of a stone dust pathway around the perimeter for drainage. There was also relocation of the bases, plates and extension of the base paths.”
He adds that the new clay mixture will need some time to settle.
“If it rains today the product can still get pretty soft at the moment but that is expected to get better,” he said. “And hopefully to with the natural compaction of the snow that we have it should be pretty good shape starting next summer.”
Olford says the project helps various leagues and schools that use the ballparks throughout the summer. The town is waiting on whether it’s qualified for a Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation grant to cover up to 75 per cent of the costs.
