Kap mayor stands by council decision regarding a vaccine incentive lottery

Kapuskasing Town Council’s decision to create a vaccine incentive lottery may seem like a bold move to some, but the Mayor believes it’s a decision that had to be made. Dave Plourde says to have just 52 per cent of residents vaccinated is unacceptable, and now the town has an opportunity to change the outcome.

“If it costs the municipality $5,000 to ensure that we get that number that we really want to see to allow us to open safely than it’s money well spent,” he said. “And furthermore, that money has to be spent within the community, within the businesses that exist within the town of Kapuskasing.”

Plourde says the town wants to take advantage of the extra vaccines provided by the Porcupine Health Unit.

“We want to make sure none go to waste and everyone gets the opportunity to get one and that’s the whole goal behind this,” he said. “If we have achieved that than we have done our job and you know it permits us to reopen safely and go back to what we are use to.”
