Town council looking at lottery incentive draw to increase vaccination rate in community

Kap Town Council is looking at a lottery to help improve the community’s COVID-19 vaccination rate.

Five clinics will be held in the Model Town starting on Friday for those to not only get their second dose but for others to get their first one. Council is setting up an incentive of $1,000 for each clinic that is full for a total of $5,000. Administrator Guylain Baril offered the lottery option as a way to increase the vaccination rate from its current low of 52 per cent.

Baril added that there are still a number of people who don’t have their first shot and the incentive lottery could be a way of getting more needles in arms.

Several councilors offered some caution on the idea concerned about properly using tax payer’s money. Council also hopes to get assistance from local businesses to add to this draw option.

Details on how the incentive lottery would work still need to be finalized by the town in time for Friday’s first clinic.
