With numbers so high, Catton says she can’t support reopening schools

With no sign in sight to rising COVID-19 case numbers in Porcupine Health Unit territory, our medical officer of health doesn’t think schools should reopen.

Dr. Lianne Catton says that’s despite the health unit’s steadfast belief in the critical nature of in-person leaning.

“We have always supported and definitely followed and shared the message that schools should be the first to open and the last to close,” she told a Friday afternoon news conference. “I have to be honest. It absolutely crushes me that unfortunately, our numbers at this point in time simply do not support opening schools in our region.”

Like the rest of use, Catton is awaiting word on what the province intends to do on this issue.
