Pothole season has new challenges due to pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has put pressure on municipal budgets with rising costs on everything including fixing up streets during the spring and summer. Town of Kap Manager of Public Works Eric Cote says the cost asphalt has increased due to elevated gas prices.

“Some materials are harder to get and COVID-19 has impacted the way the companies manage their staff as well with all of these restrictions out there which are needed,” he said. “We deal with our employees differently social distancing being one of those aspects.”

Cote says the decision on which streets are selected first is based on a variety of factors.

“The way we go about picking and choosing our primary streets and the first repairs compared to the second repairs is truly based on the minimum maintenance standards,” he said. “We also look at traffic loading of each individual street.”
