Carol Hughes says federal government needs to shift priorities on Canadians not themselves

The announcement by the federal government this week to end the current parliamentary session and not have a new one until mid-September’s speech of the throne doesn’t sit to well with Carol Hughes.

The MP for Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing says the government shouldn’t be looking at their own problems.

“And we think that is absolutely wrong,” Hughes said. “It’s not a transparent move. We need the government to be there for Canadians and they have left them hanging. It’s real problematic.”

This has also fueled calls for a possible snap election, something that Hughes says isn’t needed.

“I don’t know if people are ready for an election in the middle of a pandemic when they are still having trouble going back to work, or wondering how they are going sending their kids back to school and there no childcare available for some of those,” she said.

Hughes says the federal government needs to do a better job in working with all political parties like they did in supporting some of the NDP’s legislation suggestions.

“With a planned sitting next week and committees working hard to get answers and solutions for Canadians, now is the wrong time to stop everything in the name of self-interest,” said Hughes. “Our priority should be on Canadians who are still relying on the CERB and don’t know how they will pay the bills at the end of the month.”

Hughes says New Democrats will work to keep delivering for Canadians.

“That’s why we’re focusing on the needs of Canadians who are still struggling and worried about caring for their kids, their elderly parents, or keeping a roof over their heads and food on their table,” said Hughes. “As long as we can continue to force the government to work with us so we can deliver for people across the country, that’s what we’ll keep doing.”
