OPP: Theft from Vehicles in Area has Increased

The Northeast OPP says it’s seen a rise in theft from vehicles in the last two months.

The Kapuskasing and Hearst OPP says of all the calls it has received from residents involving theft from a vehicle, none of the items have been recovered.

Staff Sergeant Baldassare Nuccio from the OPP says often residents aren’t following basic safety guidelines for keeping their vehicles safe.

He says most thefts are crimes of opportunity, and just by locking your doors you can prevent losing any belongings or even your vehicle.

Nuccio says the Lock it or Lose it campaign aims to reduce theft and residents should always take care when securing their vehicles.

The OPP says a professional can steal a vehicle in 30 seconds, even without your keys so it’s important for residents to keep their vehicles as secure as possible.
