This week’s look at Kapuskasing history is all about a devastating fire in Val Albert We head to the July 3rd, 1963 edition of the Northern Times where a fire leveled three homes on a section of Highway 11.
The origin of the fire that started at 2:45 pm was unknown and it took firefighters until about supper time to have it under control. The fire was fought by the Kapuskasing firefighters and volunteers but it was greatly hampered by the lack of water.
The nearest water was taken from Gough creek, almost a quarter mile away. The pumper truck had to make several trips to the creek to refill. The department of lands and forests as well as equipment from Spruce Falls assisted in the firefighting efforts.
