Walk-in mammogram day at Sensenbrenner Hospital next week

Kapuskasing’s Sensenbrenner Hospital is in joining other hospitals across the northern Ontario to host a walk-in mammography day next Wednesday, June 18th from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

The screening is open to those between the ages of 50-74 who either haven’t had a mammogram in a while or are a first time participant. Charge technologist Tammy Stanbury says they’ve had as many as 50 people in past events they’ve held.

“”We have seen with the Covid-19 pandemic that it significantly disrupted breast cancer screening participation leading to a backlog and declines in screening rates,” she said. “So since then efforts have focused on rebuilding that screening volume reaching those who may have missed previous messaging about the availability.”

Stanbury says the screening doesn’t take very long about 10-15 minutes.

“So the longest part to the whole thing is just registering and getting you into our system once you arrive we will get you logged in and while you are waiting to have your mammogram you can have like I said coffee and little deserts and stuff,” she added.

She adds there will be extra staff available to make sure everyone is as comfortable as possible.
