Kap History – American salute after departure from Lowther base

We’re still at the radar base in Lowther this week, for our local history feature.

Last week, we told you about the changeover from American to Canadian command coming up on July 1st, 1963, as reported by the Northern Times.

In that same issue, an editorial paid tribute to the United States Air Force members who served there and very much became part of the community.

It lists all the ways they participated in the life of Kapuskasing as friends in need… especially “when emergencies arose and they were first at the scene to render every possible assistance.”

The editorial concluded with the words “Goodbye, Yanks; and God bless you all!”

We thank the Kap Public Library for supplying us with the material for our weekly feature.
