Inaugural year of Northern Times offered lots of Kapuskasing history content

The inaugural year of the Northern Times provided our Kapuskasing history segments with a lot of good content. We look back at one of the big stories from August 9th 1961 where the Chamber of Commerce wanted to offer tourists and visitors free parking.

The Chamber’s plan was to give visitors from outside of Ontario and those from south of the border free parking while staying — as a way to get people to come to town.

Under the proposal, each visitor would be given a cardboard key to place in their vehicle. However it had to get approval from town council and that wasn’t well received. In fact, at a meeting later in the month of August in that year the request was denied as being too costly.

An ongoing thanks to the Kapuskasing Public Library for their support of our weekly feature.
