Next Monday is budget night in Kapuskasing and it appears that a slight increase might be on the way to taxpayers. Town Administrator Guylain Baril says the finance committee is asking council to approve it. He adds that 2025 is a special year with the budget not being impacted by rising policing costs and negotiations with the Fire Department.
“In the case of the police there is a grant to offset the cost but in 2026 we will see the full magnitude of that increase and the same with the firemen,” he said. “There’s also a couple sources of revenue in 2025 that we may or may not be able to count on in the future.”
Baril says it’s a balanced budget but the increase is necessary to offset two grants that the town might not be getting next year.
“We’re also recommending to put some funds aside for the much needed infrastructure projects for the town,” he said. “This is something that we have been bringing up for a few years now. The pipping in the ground is getting old some of it is as old as the town like 100 years old and it won’t last forever.”
