The front page headline in the Northern Times of April 25th, 1962 proclaims “Hoodlums Responsible For Kap Post Office Fire”, and is the topic of this week’s local history feature.
The story relates how at 2:30 the morning before, a passerby noticed smoke coming from the post office letter box near the Queen Street entrance.
The fire was contained to that area, burning 150 pieces of mail.
Postmaster Maurice Cousineau said about half were printed matter and the rest either business or personal letters. Postal authorities were trying to identify the senders, so they could be contacted and replacements be prepared. Fifteen letters were unidentifiable.
Cousineau said only mail dropped into the box after six o’clock Monday night was affected.
