Harsher Penalties for Distracted Driving Implemented this month

Effective September 1st new penalties for drivers breaking the law will be implemented.

Distracted driving charges are being raised to $490 and three demerit points.

“Dooring” a cyclist will mean a fine of $365 and three demerit points, cyclists are now subject to new laws as well including proper reflectors and lights being equipped at all times.

Failure to slow down and moving over a lane – where possible – for tow trucks stopped on roads will now have a penalty of $490.

The OPP says it will not be lenient with the new laws in its first month of implementation.
