New Extendicare nursing home still on hold in Kapuskasing

There appears no progress is being made for Extendicare to build a new 128 bed long term care facility in Kapuskasing. During his update town council last night, Mayor Dave Plourde says that Extendicare officials have told the province that the construction costs in Northern Ontario are much higher than the South. He adds the town of Kap will lobby the government for help.

“Anytime we have the opportunity to talk to the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care I think we are going to do so,” he said. “We’re gonna make sure they hear the message that we need a new facility in Kapuskasing, and that we don’t want to see what happened during that pandemic three years ago happen again.”

He says there are a lot of things that have to line-up before shovels hit the ground.

“We got the blessing of government to construct a facility in Kapuskasing and it was the first phase,” he said. “And now it’s about making sure all of the ducks are in a row and that it’s a positive experience for them to construct in Northern Ontario.”

Construction was expected to start this summer and completed by 2025.
