Kapuskasing resident Mason Marin will represent his hometown in the North American Indigenous Games that begin later this weekend in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Kapuskasing District High School student will be a member of the boys’ basketball team. He says it’s going to be a cool event to attend.
“5,000 athletes from all different provinces and states like in my pool,” he said. “We have Wisconsin and Newfoundland so there is a whole bunch of stuff to obviously celebrate you know elite level sports but also the indigenous culture so that’s pretty cool.”
He says it was a long and winding process that first had him on the team as an alternate and forced him to change sports.
“So I ended up applying for track and field and I made track and field,” he said. “So I was jazzed about that but then another month goes by and they text me for basketball – they said hey we got a spot we heard some good things after the selection process. So ok I’m gonna hoop I’m gonna play.”
Marin says being a member of the Kolts’ boys basketball team that participated in the provincial championships earlier this year helped his development in the sport.
