Hearst healthcare recruiters hearing positive news about community, hoping to bring in international doctors

The coordinator of the healthcare professional recruitment committee says some of the physicians at job fairs she’s spoken to are impressed with Hearst’s quality of life.

Melanie Goulet says the town has shorter commute times compared to other larger cities along with trails, lakes and parks.

“The type of lifestyle they can have over here. The housing costs for as much over here it feels like there’s an increase, but if you compare to other locations it’s nothing so you can still have an affordable house here.”

She says the town doesn’t have extra physicians to provide supervision during a training session so the change would make it easier to bring in new doctors from other countries.

“We will definitely explore other countries like Ireland, the UK, and Australia. It would be awesome if we could bring a physician from there and they could settle in our community.”

Hearst will be adding two doctors next month, but it still leaves the community several short of required total of eight.

Dr. Hannah Shaheen-Fuller grew up in Burlington, Ontario. A medical graduate from Spartan Health Sciences School of Medicine in St. Lucia and Chicago, she then completed her medical residency at McMaster University.

Hearst native Shyanne Fournier is currently completing her medical residency at the Notre Dame Hospital and the Nord-Aski Family Health Team.

Having recently taken the national exam, her studies at NOSM University (Northern Ontario School of Medicine) will conclude at the end of June.
