About 90 residents from Kashechewan First Nation will be arriving in Val-Rita Harty today. It’s part of an ongoing precautionary evacuation due to spring flooding concerns. The ooperations began last night when 12 people arrived in Cochrane and were shuttled over to the community.
Mayor Johanne Baril says there will be six flights arriving at the Kapuskasing Airport. The residents will be staying at the Five Star Evacuation Centre, the former Auberge Owens Inn.
She says the decision to get involved is the municipality’s commitment towards reconciliation. She adds that it’s important to keep an open mind and learn new ways.
