Healthy Senior Expos planned for area later this month

The Porcupine Health Unit is offering a series of health fairs for seniors this fall, in communities right across the region.

Public health nurse Natalie Vachon-Ukrainetz says it’s a good opportunity for seniors to learn about available health and wellness services..

“Seniors don’t always know what services are available to them,” she notes. “So it’s kind of a way to get them out and about and to see what services they can access.”

The information is provided by guest speakers and at booths.

Kapuskasing’s Health Fair takes place on Thursday, Oct. 24 at the Centre De Loisirs from noon to 4 pm. There is one planned for Smooth Rock Falls on the same day from 1 to 4 pm at its community center. Hearst will have their own fair on Thursday, Oct. 30 from 1 – 4 pm at the Arts Council office.

“The booths consist of health professionals” she says, “so there’s like a dietitian, maybe a pharmacist, public health nurses.  We are also providing the flu vaccine to anybody who’s 65 years of age and over.”
