Happy Ending for Polar Bear Cub that Wandered into Attiwapiskat

Details about the capture and release of a polar bear cub in Attiwapiskat are coming out from the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service.

One of the responding officers, Constable Justin Ruffo says police had to work closely with members of the community to capture and release the cub last week.

Ruffo says they got the call Monday morning and were able to corner the cub in a back yard. He says they tried putting it in a dog cage, but the bear broke free. Ruffo says eventually they tied up the cub in a tarp, put it in the back of the police car and drove it to the outskirts of town where it was released unharmed.

Later that day the N.A.P.S received reports of a full grown polar bear wandering around the outskirts of the community. Ruffo says it was about two days later they saw the full grown polar bear and cub walking together on the other side of the river. The constable who helped capture and release the cub says it’s not every day something like this happens, but he’s glad there was a happy ending to the story.

Ruffo says the cub looks much smaller in the picture than it did in real life. He says the bear weighed about 200 pounds.
