Update on Abitibi Commons Project

Riversedge Developments is promising the Abitibi Commons project will provide an essential boost to the economy in Iroquois Falls. Last week a meeting was held to go over some of the changes coming to the mill site.

Work on the project is at the point where sections of the old mill are being demolished. Some of the structures that will remain standing include the front office complex, and the historical buildings along the riverfront, but the big yellow crane which has become a part of Iroquois Falls’ skyline will be going.

Right now work is being done to try and bring the environmental conditions of the property up to provincial standards. About 33,000 tonnes of soil is being moved from the mill site and brought to the landfill since contamination levels in the soil are low enough that it’s not considered hazardous.

The Abitibi Commons project will look to turn the mill site into a multi-industry facility that will have a positive economic impact on the community.
