New Democrat MP Disagrees with Liberal MP over FedNor Funding Increase

A Northern Ontario New Democrat is taking exception to comments made by the Liberal MP for Nickel Belt.

Last week Marc Serre said under the federal budget, FedNor funding will increase over the next two years.

But Carol Hughes of Algoma Manitoulin Kapuskasing says that’s not the case.

Hughes says there is no extra money for FedNor in the budget.

She says what is going up by $40 million dollars over the next two years is the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and stresses this is not FedNor.

The increase for this agency is found on page 125 of the budget.

Hughes says either Serre is misleading the public about FedNor funding or he misread the budget as a rookie MP.

Hughes adds there was a recent meeting where the director of FedNor also said there was no increase.

But the New Democrat has a challenge for Serre.

Hughes says if Serre supports more money for FedNor, then she wants him to lobby the Liberal government, which he represents, and request the same ask that the NDP has made for some time which is put more money in FedNor.
