The Porcupine Health Unit is asking residents to check their vaccination history for whooping cough.
The PHU says the disease is contagious and can spread through sneezing and coughing quite easily.
The Infectious Disease Program Coordinator at the PHU, Chantal Porter says the unit is primarily concerned with the spread to infants and young children.
She says in babies it can cause pneumonia, seizures, inflammation of the brain and in extreme cases permanent brain damage.
