MNR: Drivers Should be Cautious of Wildlife on Roads

Winter weather mixed with wildlife wandering onto our roads can sometimes be a deadly combination.

The MNR is asking drivers to be alert near creeks or rivers, in the many wooded corridors in the Northeast and especially where wildlife crossing signs are posted.

It says moose are more active in fall and early winter.

The OPP says moose accounted for nearly 50 per cent of all collisions over the summer months in the Northeast.

The MNR says checking speed, flashing lights and alerting animals with short bursts of your horn are ways to give them time to get off the road.

It says if you see a ministry vehicle dealing with wildlife near a roadway be sure to slow down and give the scene enough space in case the animals cross back onto the road.
