The shaping and expansion of Kapuskasing is the topic of this week’s look at local history.
A December story in a 1964 edition of the Northern Times reported about a meeting between the community of Brunetville, the Ontario Housing Corporation and the province. Over 200 people attended the meeting at the Notre Dame de la Paix Church and learned about an extensive face lifting project being proposed.
It was considered a pilot project of its kind and was chose to receive financial assistance from the government because it was lacking essential services and home improvements were urgently needed. The proposed improvements would create a district of pleasant homes on fully serviced lots that would form an integral part of the Town of Kapuskasing.
Among the services being installed were improved roads, water sewers and a disposal plant. The province was offering several courses including home construction and renovation to meet building requirements. The cost of a serviced lot ranged from $1,450 to $2,200 depending on the size.
