After 17 days of fighting the forest fire known as Timmins 9, the MNR reports it’s now under control. The fire hazard in our region has been reduced to “low”.
Timmins 9 burned more 3,151 hectares of forest, north of Gogama and west of Hwy. 144.
Information officer Isabelle Chenard says suppression action has ensured no further spread. Weather also helped the human battle on the ground and from the air.
“We did have significant rainfall over the last day and a half or so as well as the rain received earlier this week,” she acknowledges.
Crews will continue to douse hotspots as members of the coordination team break camp and head to their home bases.
There are implementation orders on roads to ensure safe operation and a NOTAM – Notice to Air Missions – banning aircraft from flying over.
“You can check updates on both of those restrictions on our website moving forward at ontario.ca/fireupdates,” says Chenard.
