The Catholic Women’s League in the Diocese of Hearst-Moosonee is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a convention in Kapuskasing on May 1st to 3rd.
Convener Hazel Barbour is expecting 40 women.
“They’re from all of our six councils throughout the diocese,” she outlines, “so they’re going to be coming from Hornepayne, Cochrane, Chapleau, Longlac, of course Kapuskasing but also Geraldton.”
The convention will open and close with a mass. In between, there will be business meetings, guest speakers, social activities, a banquet and entertainment.
Barbour says there will also be presentations to the CWL’s most senior members.
Barbour says the League is very important to the church. With the communities shrinking, the women are instrumental in keeping activities alive. They take care of the liturgy and fundraising to keep the churches operating, for example.
“Everything that it takes to run a faith community and to give, I guess, it’s that homey feeling that women bring to things. We keep things together.”
