More than three years in, Rebecca Fudge-Schnarr disappearance still being investigated

For more than eight months, the investigation into the disappearance of Rebecca Fudge-Schnarr has centered on the Nellie Lake landfill site, owned by the town of Iroquois Falls.

She’s the 17-year-old girl who disappeared from her home on Moffat Rd., just north of Monteith on November 24th, 2022.

OPP Detective Inspector Tom McVey is the case manager. He says the search at the landfill has been ongoing since last July 10th, on the assumption that Becky is no longer alive.

“Essentially we’re searching for evidence and that evidence includes Rebecca’s remains,” he states. “We’re not in a position to provide further details about the evidence in order to protect the integrity of the investigation and potential court proceedings.”

McVey says 10,000 cubic metres of material have been checked.

“Somewhat equivalent to searching more than 1,000 dump truck loads of material.”

The landfill search results from information that’s part of the investigation.

“We do believe foul play has been a factor in Rebecca’s disappearance,” he says. “As a result, there’s an ongoing criminal investigation that has led us to the Nellie Lake landfill.”

McVey calls that operation, conducted by 20 OPP officers daily with help from contractors and their heavy equipment, “a monumental undertaking.”
