The chair of the U18 national curling championships says the atmosphere at the McIntyre arena and curling club in Timmins is amazing.
Steve Meunier says the arena has been turned into a five-sheet curling stadium and there’s a lot of support for the 42 boys’ and girls’ teams going for national titles.
“The teams have their followers from their home provinces,” he notes, “and we’ve had locals come in, buy tickets to watch the games.”
Meunier says he’s backed up by an army of volunteers. This is the second time in the last four years that the McIntyre Curling Club has hosted the championship. Meunier says he’s so happy to have the opportunity to do it again.
“As we inch towards the playoffs, we would definitely see bigger crowds on into the weekend for the finals. We’re hoping to, for lack of a better word, pack the Mac.”
Forty-two boys’ and girls’ teams began the week. The finals go Saturday.
