Avoiding getting or spreading illness over the holidays

Indoor holiday get-togethers can be responsible for spreading respiratory sicknesses like flu and COVID-19.

So we turned to Northeastern Public Health infectious diseases manager Lynn Leggett for some advice.

She says the number 1 thing is to be immunized. Then wash your hands often, keep surfaces clean and wear a mask in a crowded area.

“Especially wear a mask if you’re visiting someone in a long term care facility or someone in a retirement home to try to protect others,” she counsels.

“If you’re not feeling well, take a pass on that dinner with your family. Do it by Zoom or do it on Teams. And again, it’s not too late to get the flu shot.”

Leggett says the health unit is still offering immunization against flu and COVID-19. You can get details on the Northeastern Public Health website.
