Sometime in the next two or three years, the Timmins and District Hospital will open a new emergency department by adding an area equal to four times the size of the current one.
Health minister Sylvia Jones announced it Monday at the hospital.
CEO Kate Fyfe says that will allow the ER to handle patient traffic that has doubled the past few years.
“With the new emergency department and the 27,000 sq. ft. that we’ll be adding,” she told a large gathering, we will be increasing our staffing complement to be able to support patients.”
TADH is a hub for eleven Northeastern hospitals covering a geographical area bigger than the Atlantic provinces.
While the province will pay the lion’s share, hospital Fyfe says there’s a local funding component.
“Right now, we’re looking around $100-million for the capital project. As well, our local share supports both the construction cost as well as equipment for our hospital. We’re looking at an estimate for this project around $20-million.”
TADH EMERGENCY DEPT. EXPANSION BY THE NUMBERS
- Addition of 27,000 sq. ft. is four times the size of the present ER
- Province contributing $100M for construction
- Local contribution towards construction and equipment $20M (estimated)
- TADH is the hub for 11 Northeastern hospitals representing 110,000 people from region, up to Hudson and James Bay coasts
- Geographic area served: 140,000 sq km – larger than the Atlantic provinces
