Local Canada Post workers pushing to keep rural post offices open

Picket lines are up in Kapuskasing as strike action has begun by Canada Post employees. The walk-out is the Canadian Union of Postal Workers direct response to an overhaul ordered by the federal government to the corporation.

Local president Josianne Grenier says they will be set up on the circle between 10 and 2 trying to catch the lunch time crowd for support.

“So we are here in Kapuskasing trying to save our jobs, trying to save the door-to-door delivery, trying to keep the small door to door service like Kapuskasing,” she said.

Grenier says they also want to support other post offices along the highway 11 corridor.

“We also want to save all of the small rural post offices like and they have multiple ones along Highway 11,” she said. “It’s unclear at the moment exactly what Canada Post will do, but they are talking about closing those places too and we totally disagree on that.”

The federal government announced measures to cut costs and modernize operations that include lifting the moratorium on community mailbox conversions and a freeze on rural post office closures.
