The town of Fauquier-Strickland is in a financial crisis and will be forced to suspend all municipal services and lay off employees as of August 1st.
In a press release, Mayor Madelaine Tremblay says the town has accumulated more than $2.5 million in operating deficit over the past decade, and has completely depleted all reserve funds. She contacted the Minister of Municipal Affairs Robert Flack but no response has been given.
Tremblay noted that the town has requested immediate intervention from the ministry including the appointment of supervisor or administrator and emergency financial assistance.
In 2024 municipal taxes were increased 24 per cent to cover the shortfall and an alternative of a tax levy of 230 per cent for 2025 wasn’t proceeded with.
