Kap History – Sport Shirts Month in 1963

This week’s Kapuskasing History segment is a dressed down version featuring sports shirt month.  A two year old tradition was one of the big stories in the July 17th 1963 edition of the Northern Times.

Back in the day, business people wore a shirt and tie to work but for one month only they were allowed to wear a sport shirt instead. Chairman of the Sport shirts committee John Dubien (Do-be-in) says suit and ties don’t make sense during the muggier summer months and the change allows business staff members to be more efficient and comfortable.

Dubien said at the time that the Chamber was pleased that sport shirt month caught on so rapidly and thankful of the support of banks and other institutions for their help.

We appreciate the Kapuskasing Public Library for their assistance with our weekly look back.
