The town of Hearst is looking at extending construction of the connecting link from 6th to 15th street until next spring. Administrator Eric Picard says they’ve made a request to the provincial ministry of transportation because approval for the funding was delayed due to the election.
“So once we got the final approval and things like that we reached out and contacted local companies that could bid on the job to have an idea of their availability, but unfortunately their summers are all filled up including their fall so it wasn’t realistic to have the project done at the end of the year,” he said.
The total cost of the project is about $2 million. Meantime, town council has approved the work to be done on Edward Street from 9th to just past Claude Larose Recreation Centre. He adds that it’s hoped that construction can be complete by the fall.
“Probably the section of street most used between the schools and the arena,” he said. “It’s gotten to a point where the potholes can’t be repaired consistently that the water filtration gets under the street so it’s kind of becoming a problem that’s getting worse and worse even if we are doing patches and things like that.”
