The Mayor of Kapuskasing reported that there has been some progress made with Extendicare and building the new long term care facility in the community.
Dave Plourde says Extendicare officials were in town about three weeks ago to get soil samplings at possible site locations. He adds that there might be some light at the end of the long tunnel following the province’s budget announcement.
“The government came through with new funding and that’s positive news for Extendicare and it looks very promising for the future, so we are expecting more on that to come between now and the next couple of months,” he said.
Plourde says once a location is chosen then the town can begin planning future development.
“And you know if we have to make sure that the infrastructure is there for Extendicare certainly we would want to be able to provide for housing in the area as well so it gives us a better idea of where we can go,” he added.
Extendicare is proposing a 128 bed long care nursing home for Kapuskasing to replace the existing one.
