In our weekly look at Kapuskasing and area history, a Northern Times reporter flies up to Moosonee to learned more on a new airstrip.
We head to the August 21st 1963 edition of the newspaper where the new runway was built by Alex Hennessey. The airstrip allowed wheeled equipped aircraft to land in Moosonee where they couldn’t before. He said that any new runway must have at least one aircraft land on it before it can receive approval from the federal government.
The flight began at the Mattagami Skyways Remi Lake headquarters in Moonbeam and ended when the plane touched down in a field near the James Bay Goose Club. The airstrip was also going to be used by hunters to head north to a remote camp.
Our thanks, as always to the Kapuskasing Public Library for their support of our weekly segment.
