Time is running out to have the studded tires removed from your car for the summer.
That word today from Acting Sgt. Michelle Simard of the OPP.
“You can have studded tires on your vehicle between September 1st and May 31st if you live in Northern Ontario,” she says. “That’s one thing that we have to be mindful of, is that they have to come off in the next couple days.”
Simard says the fine for having them on outside of those dates is $110.00
The law banning studs in the summer is to protect roadways. When pavement gets hot, studs can chew it up.
“Studded tires are for a purpose during winter to provide more traction in icy and snow conditions,” Simard notes, adding that they’re simply not necessary outside of the allowable period of September 1st to May 31st.
