Kap History – change of command in Lowther

The changeover of the Lowther Air Base from American to Canadian hands is the subject of our weekly look at Kapuskasing History.

A story in the June 26th 1963 edition of the Northern Times introduced Squadron Leader Ivor Tenove as the first Canadian to run the operations. Under the agreement Canada undertook the financing, manning and maintenance of the 11 pine tree line radar sites in exchange for 66 US built interceptors.

The Royal Canadian Air Force took over the station in Lowther west of Kapuskasing that for a number of years had been under American command. Many of the airmen stationed had become well known in the community.

Our thanks to the Kapuskasing Public Library for fresh content for our weekly segment.
